OK people, we need to be a bit more imaginative. I mean, if you have the bucks and money is no object, by all means just go for the high-end stuff. But if you are like me, and the bank account is limited, then a little effort is required. Yeah, I wish I could buy every Gladstone drum that came along like I did when no one knew what they were or who he was well, practically no one. But with the escalating prices of vintage drums, I have to be more creative. Personally, I am in rapt ecstasy over the current price trend of vintage drums. I genuinely surprised and amused when I see vintage drum collectors whine and cry sometimes belligerently over these price trends.

Many of the snare stands, foot pedals, and drum hardware still bore the imprint of WFL, while some bore the pre Ludwig trademark but continued to be sold while the company made new dies bearing the Ludwig Drum Company logo. Many snare drums were built with the new Ludwig strainer on the throw-off side and a WFL butt-plate. Since the design of the parts was identical for both names, Ludwig used the old parts until they ran out, and then replaced them with identical parts with the new brand.
The same rule held true for badges to some extent. When William F. Shortly after the purchase of the Ludwig name, the decision was made to change the name to the Ludwig Drum Company. They were strictly for inventory purposes, and any number could wind up on any drum. Due to the volume of drums Ludwig was producing at that time in response to the Ringo effect, a lot of badges were used and the bins were refilled as supplies got low.
Another method of dating most Ludwig drums is the rubber-stamped date on the inside the shell. The dates are frequently smeared beyond the point of recognition, but by observing the ink color, you can approximate from which half of the decade your drum comes. One explanation for this is that the company put badges on the shells after applying their covering. When two rack toms first appeared on a set, they were the same size, and the same applied to floor toms and bass drums. If you favored a slightly smaller kit, the Hollywood outfit was the only five-piece offered.

When the group made its first American television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in , Ringo was so impressed with the Ludwig drum kit provided that he asked Bill Ludwig to build one specially for him, with the company name emblazoned on the bass drumhead. Ludwig did so, prompting such a huge demand for his products that the Chicago-based firm had to build a ,sq ft extension to its factory and recruit a night shift.
The clumsy old wood pedal, used to accompany circus marches, could not meet the rigorous demands of the new syncopated jazz and ragtime rhythms, and the brothers invented the modern bass drum pedal now used by professional drummers worldwide. Considered by many to be the most elegant lug ever designed, the Imperial tension casing incorporated a beautiful and majestic art deco design. Like the original Slingerland Streamline lug, it too had the threads tapped directly into the metal casing and suffered from the same thread design flaw as the Slingerland Streamline lug from that era.
The Imperial lugs were not incorporated into bass drum design until around This unbelievably rare snare drum is an engraved Deluxe version of the Silver Anniversary model.

The Ludwig Pioneer snare drum first appeared in the Ludwig catalogue, marketed as a lower priced student drum. It soon became a market leader in the USA at the lower price range, outselling its brand competitors that had similar models. Today it no longer has the budget tag — here in the UK the drum is becoming a very popular choice for use in the studio. The drum is made up of a 3 ply shell with maple reinforcement rings.
It featured six self-aligning lugs and triple flange hoops. Finishes included mahogany, lacquer two colour Duco or pearl. There are quirky drums out there that just came out of the factory that way. We have several Pioneers in the shop as I write, none of them are catalogue correct and show no signs of being tampered with. Another is in natural mahogany with nickel on brass hardware and a red felt dampener but a serial number that dates it to !

Some of the shells , oh yeah, were gorgeous! Some of them are not what you think. You were given fair warning. I described my experience acquiring such a drum kit in these pages. The look was interesting, granted, but the metal was soft and prone to crack; the shells were porous second-grade Asian softer-woods, overly flexible, and often untrue or out-of-round.
They had no value as trade-ups to prestigious brands they emulated: Slingerland, Gretsch, and occasionally Rogers.

It has a date stamp from , but the interior is maple, so I really don’t know what’s up with this drum. The outer ply is mahogany, so I covered it with a maple veneer.
