Hip-hop was already a marketable commodity; it was a bit like when hip-hop emerged out of what was a much more underground story, and she definitely captured some kind of zeitgeist happening. Neneh Cherry was born in Sweden. Her mother is Swedish and her father is from Sierra Leone. Her mother remarried to the jazz musician Don Cherry, who raised Neneh from birth. At 15, she went with her father to England, and Nina then dropped out of school and stayed in England and actually performed with the all-girl punk band, The Slits. The song that I chose is called “Kong” and it came out in I chose this song because it captures a number of different styles within it: It has sort of the sound of Bristol trip-hop — that’s Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead — as well as a sultry tone to it, but not sweet. I think one of the things that happens with these hits is that they kind of freeze the artist in one moment, especially when the artist is very young and they are seen as capturing the essence of that moment.

Neneh was actually born in Stockholm. Her father, the Sierra Leonean drummer Amahddu Jah and Swedish mother Monika Karlsson separated when she was very young and stepfather Don Cherry, a great American jazz trumpeter, raised her. Life for the family was itinerant to say the least and they lived in various hippy style communes when Neneh was growing up, in Yorkshire, New York and London. Jazz scions abound elsewhere.

Like we said — she was always likely to manage a melody. Friendships with some leading lights on the Bristol Urban scene informed the compelling beats of the disc. That track had in fact been issued before on a McVey project but when Bomb the Bass star Tim Simenon remixed it simply tore through clubland and into history. It all fell into the groove pocket.

In a telephone interview from Los Angeles the other day, the year-old singer explained the title of the first single from her debut album, ”Raw Like Sushi” Virgin. She sings and raps with a sassy sexual candor that is rare even in the uninhibited realm of hip-hop. Among the topics Ms. Cherry addresses in her songs are the necessity for sexually active young women to accept the responsibilities of pregnancy and parenthood ”The Next Generation” , the plight of inner-city prostitutes ”Inna City Mamma” and the problems of being in love with young men who have adult bodies and childlike emotional development ”Manchild”.

Although Ms. Cherry’s songs carry strong messages, they’re not delivered with a moralistic tone. They are streetwise pep talks urging self-respect. But New York City is clearly the spiritual home base of her music. When I was 16, I moved to London and have been there ever since. Growing up, Ms. She has also studied African dance and has a special fondness for flamenco music. Cherry said the singer she most admires is Chaka Khan, for her aura of strength and fearlessness.
