Since the Stardate systems used in various Star Trek episodes are meant to measure time in the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Centuries, the same Stardate system cannot be used to express contemporary dates i. However, for those who would like to create Stardates to represent contemporary dates, there are three methods that can be used: Represent the current date in YYMM. For example, September 08, , would be written as “Stardate DD format. Another digit must be added for years after , such that September 11, , would be written as “Stardate This system can be used to express any year after in Stardate format. This system also roughly corresponds to the Stardates used in the first six Star Trek motion pictures, such that if a new movie were made today in The Original Series continuity, then its Stardate would be close to the YYMM. For example, January 1, , would correspond to Stardate

And then, in its final episode, the series heads in a more personal direction again, considering why death is important to humanity, and saying a permanent goodbye to a beloved character. Okay, a probably permanent goodbye, under the circumstances. Nothing about the beginning predicted the ending, and it was a bumpy road from one to the other, with a lot of veering between action and contemplation, between literary tropes and Star Trek movie standoffs.
Halfway through the season, we sat down to evaluate how it seemed to be heading in the wrong direction. After the finale, we reconvened to check in on whether Picard course-corrected. Tasha: Well, I imagine we both have a lot to say about this season as a whole — how far it came, the new characters and windows into Starfleet it gave us, where it might go from here.
But we really have to start with the finale, right? How are you feeling about where this season ended, Susana?

We’re only a little bit closer to understanding the mystery of Dahj and Soji after Star Trek: Picard ‘s third episode, but there was one big surprise: Hugh. You probably didn’t recognize him if you never followed Star Trek: The Next Generation — or maybe even if you did, given how different he looks. His name was only mentioned once in an easy-to-miss moment. But the executive director of the Romulans’ “reclamation project” is a former Borg who has quite the history with Star Trek.
He runs a research program aboard the repurposed Borg cube and he wields enough power to get Soji into the holding cell where formerly assimilated Romulans are held.

‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’: Ranking the Crew, From Picard to Pulaski
In every version of Star Trek , the crew must have a character that makes decisions solely based on logic and science. Without a doubt, Mister Spock from Star Trek: The Original Series is the best known of these characters, but he is far from the only one. Unlike every other logic-based major character in Star Trek, Data was not born, he was built. This article was originally published on May 24, With several series, dozens of seasons, and thousands of characters, the Star Trek franchise is as sprawling as the far-future worlds it explores. But few have captured the hearts and minds of Trek fans as much Jean-Luc Picard. Instead, Picard, played by English legend Patrick Stewart, ruled his ship like a philosopher king, more comfortable debating the finer nuances of moral quandaries than socking a Gorn in the face.
It’s been nearly 17 years since the character last appeared on screen, in the much-maligned film Star Trek: Nemesis , so it’s no wonder that fans were excited when CBS All-Access—and Patrick Stewart—announced last year that the character would be returning. Then nearly nine months later, on May 15, , CBS began letting details slip about Picard’s next adventure, as well as the show’s name and a teaser trailer just a week later.
Then in July, we finally saw the first full trailer featuring Picard and a few other familiar faces. With that date quickly approaching, here’s everything we know so far about Star Trek : Picard. Somewhat unimaginatively, the show is simply called Star Trek: Picard. Of course, when you have a character as storied as Stewart’s even-keeled Captain, you don’t really need much else.

As an introverted nerd growing up in the s pre-internet and pre-cell phone I found myself unable to make friends and instead took shelter in the ever-present reruns of Star Trek. It was the perfect blend of optimistic, intelligent, and dorkily earnest science fiction that, with many repeated viewings, comforted my anxious soul while giving me hope that tomorrow would be better.
In retrospect, the show also shaped my romantic interests. The characters I crushed hard on growing up would become the archetypal models for the partners I would pursue as a teenager and adult. Much like young Wesley, my high school ex was extremely intelligent, but prone to self-sabotage and finding himself in hot water both at school and in his relationships.
He struggled academically and he often broke the law in minor ways — though, thankfully, he was never as close to execution as Wesley was for stepping on that darn lawn. Like most tumultuous teen romances ours was short lived. He kissed another girl at a party and instead of coming clean about it, he enacted a Nova Squadron level cover-up and broke up with me for a fictional reason. Red Alert!

Star Trek: The Next Generation
I have an embarrassing confession to make, as the geek internet explodes over actor Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard in a new CBS series. The reason was simple economics. I had a pleasant childhood but grew up in a single-income family. My folks preferred using their limited income to take their kids to science museums and on educational experiences, rather than buying cable television — the only way to watch “TNG” in Canada.
Data “in Theory” – Star Trek: TNG. | February 14, | By: Like any good date, you’ll want to be wearing the appropriate attire. Don’t be afraid to get formal!
The Star Trek universe is a complicated place. Sure, everything takes place in the future, a time period of warp-capable starships, easy-peasy teleportation, and all the jumpsuits you can handle. Did you never get around to watching the TNG movies? How does all the new stuff factor in? In the two-part finale of The Next Generation, Picard repeatedly jumps between three time periods due to a temporal anomaly encountered by the Enterprise. Picard takes place in , so it’s pretty close to the same period.
The retired Captain suffers from an Alzheimers-like ailment known as Irumodic Syndrome, which causes him to have hallucinations and a spotty memory, which adds a whole other layer of complication to the whole boondoggle. With the help of Data now a Cambridge professor and Geordi, the peevish elder Picard manages to bluster his way onboard a Starfleet vessel, thanks to his now-ex-wife, Beverly Crusher.
Accompanied by a clutch of his closest Federation pals, Picard travels to the site of the anomaly. Eventually, Picard learns that he’s responsible for triggering the anomaly, due to his tinkering around in all three time periods. This has triggered a potentially catastrophic situation in which humanity will never exist at all. Picard later learns his longtime nemesis Q is behind it all, putting him through yet another test to justify humanity’s existence.

The premiere episode of Star Trek: Picard brings audiences to a new chapter in Jean-Luc Picard ‘s story, but it also shows that the story isn’t just about Picard–it’s also about Data, the android member of his Enterprise crew who also became one of Jean-Luc’s closest friends. Part of the reason Data is such a big deal in the new streaming series is that he remains basically one-of-a-kind in the universe.
He was a sentient android created by the cyberneticist Noonien Soong and spent his life endeavoring to be more human. Other than the two androids Soong built before Data, B-4 and Lore, there are apparently no other artificial lifeforms who are quite like him. That’s not for lack of trying, though; as we learn in the first episode of Star Trek: Picard , the Federation created a number of “synthetics,” or robots who look a bit similar to Data, but who apparently weren’t sentient although there are those who said the same of Data himself, as TNG fans know.
His relationship with Data, with Soji, with most synthetic life has been one of unequivocal acceptance. How will that change now that he is in a.
Data was the fifth and next-to-last model created by Soong and his then-wife Juliana on the Omicron Theta science colony, activated on Feb. Tripoli away team after the Crystalline Entity had drained the life force from the member colony. Not until did he realize he had a childhood-like developmental memory from an existence before that date, wiped by Soong and replaced by the colonists’ memories and logs as they faced their doom by the Entity. Data has always wished to be more human, experimenting in everything from art, acting, and poetry to keeping a pet cat Spot and imitating humanisms ranging from laughter, sneezing and whistling to dance, facial hair grooming and bedtime routines.
E ven with that goal, Data turned down a chance to be human offered by Q in , quoting Shakespeare’s “To thine own self be true,” but inched closer to his goal with the discovery of an “emotion chip” created by his builder, Dr. Noonien Soong. Although he delayed using it for over a year, the chip when finally installed in caused a near-overload. The chip proved an Achilles heel during Data’s capture by the Borg Queen, when she literally tempted him with sensations of flesh and blood he had never experienced despite his growing worldliness.
Even so, the emotional data overload was not enough to overrule his ethics program. Data has said his post-activation months were rough, but the crew who found him inspired him to join Starfleet and, after being deemed sentient, he was accepted to Starfleet Academy in – with Cmdr. Bruce Maddox of the Daystrom Institute casting the only nay vote in the decision of his examination board.
Data found the entrance exams elementary but in his freshman year discovered his biggest problems to be those of social interaction, such as practical jokes and the Sadie Hawkins Dance.
